Stamp duty and registration charges are additional expenses that are levied on purchase or transfer of a property. These charges vary from State to State.

To fund water supply and environment improvement programmes in urban areas of the State, the Punjab government has recently hiked the stamp duty charges for properties located in urban areas by one percent. With this, the current stamp duty rate in Punjab is seven percent (7%). From now on, the revised rate would be levied on property registration/transfer of the immovable asset.

n case of mutual exchange of property in a family, stamp duty would be Rs 900, including Rs 100 (pasting fee), Rs 500 (facilitation fee) and Rs 300 (mutation fee).

If the property is transferred to a family member (blood relation), no stamp duty will be charged.

However, no change in registration fee was announced. It will remain the same at the rate of one percent.

To promote female home ownership, the State government charges only five percent (including PIDB) as the stamp duty on sale or transfer of a property to a woman.
